Two Minutes With… Joanna Tolnai

2 Minutes with Joanna Tolnai one of our newest Structures Engineers…

What do you enjoy most about your role at AFD Systems?

What I enjoy most is the variety of work. From what I’ve seen so far, the team handles a wide range of tasks and analysis, and you never quite know what challenge is coming next. That unpredictability keeps things interesting and makes every day feel like an opportunity to learn something new

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received at AFD Systems?

Since I’m still quite new, the most helpful advice so far has been to ask whenever I’m unsure. It’s created a supportive environment and helped me learn faster.

Favourite film and why?

My favourite series is Star Wars. I’ve always been fascinated by aircraft and aerospace, so the combination of space travel, engineering concepts, and futuristic flight really pulls me in. Even though it’s fiction, it sparked and strengthened my interest in how things fly, how they’re designed, and what’s possible in aerospace.

Who is your role model? (in manufacturing/engineering/aerospace)

My role model would be Sir Frank Whittle, the inventor of the jet engine. His work completely transformed aviation and paved the way for modern aerospace and eventually space travel. I admire how he pushed boundaries, challenged what people believed was possible, and created technology that changed the world

Describe the team at AFD Systems in one word?

I think what best describes the team here is innovative.

What’s one fun fact about you that others might not know?

A fun fact about me is that I originally wanted to become a pilot. I went through the qualification process but didn’t quite make it — and that pushed me toward engineering and engines instead.
