Programmes

What is the entry criteria for the graduate programme? +

Have achieved (or be on track to achieve) a 2:1 or higher grade on an Engineering-related degree course.

Where will I be based? +

You will be based in our state-of-the-art office on the Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone, right next to the airport taxi way.

What kind of things will I be working on? +

At AFD we have a diverse range of customers from civil to military. You’ll get the chance to work on a wide range of these projects and be exposed to multiple disciplines early on including Computer Aided Design, Finite Element Analysis, Additive Manufacturing and 3D Scanning. What progression routes are there? +

We offer a five year development programme. By the end of this, you will have accumulated a significant amount of experience, knowledge and skill. There will be opportunities to progress into senior engineering positions as well as potentially management positions. The company is growing and as the company grows the opportunities for progression will increase.

How will I be supported in my role? +

At Airframe Designs you will be working as part of a small team, managed by an experienced engineering manager. You will be put through a structured training programme and given all the necessary tools to excel. You will have regular contact with your manager and we operate an open door policy here where you can ask as many questions as you like.

What training will I get? +

Some examples of the training we deliver are:

  • CATIA V5
  • Siemens NX
  • MSC Apex/Patran/Nastran
  • Stress and Fatigue & Damage Tolerance course delivered by an external industry expert
  • Airworthiness and Certification (both in-house and external)
  • 3D Scanning
  • Additive Manufacturing and Design for Manufacture

Will I have the opportunity to network with other graduates / apprentices? +

We have a number of graduates and apprentices currently working at AFD Systems, so you will be working with them daily, learning from them, and sharing knowledge and gaining inspiration.

I completed my studies some time ago, can I still apply? +

Yes of course, we welcome people from a wide range of backgrounds and as long as you have the necessary qualifications and aptitude, we would welcome your application.

What will my salary be? +

We offer a competitive salary which increases annually providing personal performance targets are met.

General

What's the office like? +

We are situated on the Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone, in a modern purpose built office. We have air conditioning, modern equipment, a modern, comfortable working environment, with access to local amenities such as Morrisons, Greggs, Nandos, McDonalds only a few minutes walk away.  Also, for any aeroplane buffs, the main taxi way to Blackpool Airport runway runs right past the office.

How many holidays will I get? +

Unless otherwise set out in your employment contract, you are entitled to 28 days’ paid holiday in each holiday year, or the pro rata equivalent if you work part time. This includes the usual public holidays in England and Wales or days in lieu where we require staff to work on a public holiday. Holiday allowance increases in line with your length of employment.

Do I need a driving licence? +

This would be preferred but as long as you would be willing to work towards this if required, this shouldn’t be a barrier.

Will I need a UK MOD security clearance? +

As part of your onboarding process you will be required to undergo a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.

Due to the nature of the work we do it is also highly likely that you will need to be UK MOD SC cleared. Don’t worry; we will help you through this process when required.

Can I work at AFD Systems if I don't have a British passport? +

Due to the nature of some of the projects that we work on we require all staff to have a full British passport.

Do you offer work placements/work experience? +

At the moment this is not something that AFD Systems is offering.

What are AFD Systems doing to address environmental issues? +

We have achieved ISO 14001 certification, which is all about having an efficient Environmental Management System in place. We have installed 150 solar panels plus battery storage on our building to significantly reduce our carbon footprint as we work towards net zero emissions. We are always on the look out for energy saving ideas and welcome any staff suggestions.

Do AFD Systems work with local schools / colleges / universities? +

At AFD Systems, we have close links with local universities and colleges, and often attend careers fairs, or engineering events to both promote the business and to attract engineering talent.
